about

Rainy Day (Piedmont Rag No. 2) for steel string guitar trio and cello (2012):

This is my second microtonal Piedmont Rag employing steel-string guitar trio. It is written in two movements: I. "Rainy Day", II. "Night".

Piedmont Blues/Ragtime is a traditional “pre-blues" style of guitar playing most associated with the Piedmont region of the United States. I feel a special connection to this music, in part, because I’m from an area (Metropolitan Washington, DC) which boasts a rich history of great Piedmont-style performers, including John Cephas, Elizabeth Cotten and Archie Edwards.

Guitars in this piece are specially tuned to accommodate a 36-note-to-the-octave, 1/6-tone scale.
