about

Mildly Tempered Piano was inspired by audio-induced nausea. Our piano was being tuned after years of neglect, and Stephen Fandrich the tuner was greatly challenged. I could hear the painstaking sounds of his labor through my office wall, so I took a look - I watched the oscilloscope tuner spinning erratically this way and that, heard the tones rising and falling, and began to feel literally seasick. Hearing sound had never affected me like that, physically feeling the aggressively repeated attacks, each note varying up and down, cornering me into a desolate, hopeless world from which I needed to escape. I decided to take a walk. Before I fled from my house, I set up my Zoom to record this disturbing disarray of tonality. The piece is comprised of 13 piano strings being tuned, 13 tracks layered in real time, edited to hear only the change of each individual tone.
