Greg Hooper - village

about

"Village"  is one of the first pieces I made with guitar after developing arthritis in a couple of fingers and having to stop for quite a while. I looked at different ways to bend notes without hurting my fingers. In this one I fretted the notes with my right hand and then bent them with my left hand - ie, bending "behind" the note. After the first track, each was made by by listening to the previous track, fretting a note at random then trying to bend it 'in tune' with whatever I was hearing. This piece fits in with my interest in physical, cognitive and perceptual constraints on pitch, rather than mathematical constraints. Here the main constraint is the difficulty predicting, tracking and reproducing the constantly varying pitch of what one is listening to. The result was a set of constantly shifting pitch contours that are similar in the main but not at all the same. These were then edited and shifted around a bit to make a piece of music rather than present a technical exercise.
